Elon Musk has donated over $250 million to campaign groups supporting Donald Trump for the 2024 election.
WASHINGTON – Elon Musk, the world’s richest individual, contributed more than $250 million to campaign committees backing President-elect Donald Trump, with much of the funding coming in the final weeks of the 2024 presidential race, according to newly released federal records.
Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of the social media platform X, donated $238.5 million to America PAC, a leading political action committee supporting Trump’s campaign. Federal Election Commission filings from Thursday reveal that the contributions included three weekly payments of $25 million each in October.
Additionally, Musk contributed $40.5 million through controversial daily $1 million payments to Trump supporters in seven key swing states. He described these payments as part of a "lottery" for individuals who signed a petition supporting the Constitution.
While federal law prohibits payments in exchange for votes, a Pennsylvania judge dismissed an effort by Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner to block Musk’s $1 million daily giveaways, ruling they did not violate election laws.o
Lisa Gilbert, co-president of the watchdog group Public Citizen, criticized Elon Musk's contributions to Donald Trump's campaign as "obscene."
"Elon Musk spent an outrageous $250 million to help put Donald Trump in office," Gilbert said in a statement on Friday. "Billionaires and corporate money dominated the 2024 election, highlighting the urgent need for aggressive campaign finance reforms to fix our system and eliminate the influence of big money in politics."
